Why can’t I receive wireless public alerts on my wireless device?

Have you ever heard a wireless public alert that was sent despite your device being set to silent? You may not be alone.

After receiving numerous complaints about this issue, the CRTC, in partnership with the Communications Research Centre (CRC), has conducted mobile phone testing to see how different mobile devices react to wireless alerts. Among others, the testing found that:

  • Not all phones react the same way;
  • The capability and manner of silencing or controlling the volume of the alert tone varies depending on the make, model and operating system of the phone; and
  • Phones may behave differently depending on where it is was acquired

If you need help verifying the notification settings for public alerts on your mobile device, please contact your service provider or your device’s manufacturer.
