Extreme Sports

 

On 24 November 2000, the Commission approved a Category 2 specialty television service to be known as Extreme Sports. The terms and conditions generally applicable to Category 2 services are set out in the public notice accompanying this and other decisions released today.

 

Conditions of licence

 

The licence, when issued, will expire 31 August 2007 and will be subject to the following conditions as well as to those set out in both Public Notice CRTC 2000-171 andin the licence to be issued.

 

Nature of service

 

a) The licensee shall provide a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service featuring the best of "off-beat" sports programming that will give Canadians the opportunity to live vicariously through the ultimate high associated with such extreme pastimes as high altitude sky diving, cliff diving, white water rafting, and mountain climbing.

 

b) The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990:
2b, 5b, 6a, 6b, 11, 12, 13 and 14.

 

c) Extreme sports is defined as those sports that are non-traditional or non-conventional athletic endeavours, which are performed at a high degree of intensity or risk.

 

d) The licensee shall not provide coverage of traditional competitive sports such as baseball, basketball, football, hockey, tennis or golf.

 

Definitions

 

Broadcast day refers to the 24-hour period beginning 6 a.m. each day.
