Telecom Order

Ottawa, 7 May 1998
Telecom Order CRTC 98-434
On 6 March 1998, TELUS Communications (Edmonton) Inc. (TCEI) filed an application for approval of tariff revisions to General Tariff Items 2603 and 2475, 411-Directory Assistance Service and Call Management Services, respectively.
File No.: Tariff Notice 74
1. TCEI proposed to increase its current charge of $0.50 for each of Address Information service and Telephone Number service to $0.75 and to increase the charge associated with Call Completion from $0.25 to $0.35.
2. TCEI stated that it was proposing the increases in an effort to align its charges with those of TELUS Communications Inc.'s (TCI) current directory assistance charges as well as to recover the additional costs associated with providing 411-Directory Assistance Service.
3. TCEI also proposed to remove the exemption from charges for 411-Directory Assistance Service and Call Completion for customers calling from a hotel/motel telephone.
4. In addition, TCEI proposed to remove Operator Assisted Call Display Blocking service from its General Tariff Item 2475.
5. TCEI submitted that, in the period of time since the provisioning of Total Line Blocking and Selective Call Blocking, it has experienced a dramatic decrease in the use of Operator Assisted Call Display Blocking. TCEI considers that the removal of the service will not adversely impact customers.
6. TCEI also proposed to add a condition of service to reflect the customers' added ability to request that their telephone lines not be provisioned with Call Completion.
7. TCEI stated that throughout 1997, TCEI and TCI have aligned their management and operating procedures in the provision of operator services, enabling consistency of practice and customer service to all local customers in Alberta. This alignment has resulted in very similar cost structures for the Operator Services organizations in each of the companies.
8. The Commission considers that the proposed increases in the charges for 411-Directory Assistance Service are reasonable in view of the current charges by TCI and by other Stentor member companies for similar services.
9. Having considered the application by TCEI, the Commission is of the view that the proposed tariff amendments are appropriate.
10. In light of the foregoing, the Commission orders that the proposed tariff revisions be approved effective the date of this Order.
