Foreword

Introduction

This report presents statistical and financial data compiled from the annual returns of Broadcast Distribution Undertakings (BDUs) for the broadcast year ended 31 August 2009. Section I provides data for class 1, 2 and 3 licensed distribution undertakings summarized as: all services; combined basic and non-basic programming services; non-programming services; and exempt programming services. Section II presents statistical and financial data for Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Multipoint Distribution System (MDS) undertakings. Section III provides statistical and financial data of the contributions to the creation and production of Canadian programming.

Completeness and Comparability

This report summarizes the statistical and financial information provided by the BDUs as reported in their 2009 annual returns and includes certain estimates for missing or erroneous data that have been identified during the compilation process. Also, the statistical and financial information reported for prior years has been updated to reflect any additional or adjusted information received by the Commission subsequent to the date of prior years' publications.

Starting in 2006, BDUs filed consolidated provincial statistical and financial data on all of their systems. The 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 data therefore includes exempted as well as non-exempted systems for all class 1, 2, and 3 licensees. The financial and statistical data for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 is therefore not comparable to the 2005 data.

The data provided for the 2005 broadcast year has also been restated to include the financial results of all non-exempt class 1, 2 and 3 systems. Please note that during the 2002 to 2005 period, pursuant to CRTC Decisions 2002-45, 2002-88 and 2004-382, the Commission exempted a large number of class 2 and 3 licences.

Limitation on data collected

Annual returns for the broadcast year ended 31 August 2009 were required to be filed with the Commission by 30 November 2009. This report does not include financial and statistical data for Look Communications Inc., Val Gagné Communications Association and Yourlink Inc. The annual returns for these BDUs have not been received up to the date of publication.

Confidentiality

These summary reports of the broadcast distribution industry may be distributed to the public. Due to confidentiality of data, individual provincial data are not available.

Notes

  • Interest expense includes the allocation of financing costs as determined by the corporate management of the BDU. In some cases significant year over year variances exist.
  • "Adjustments" are the result of such non-operational items as restructuring costs, amortization of goodwill and gains/losses on disposal.
  • Data contained in this report are subject to change as the Commission receives additional or revised information. The Industry Analysis Branch would appreciate being informed of any problems encountered with these statistics.
