Denial of applications proposing radio services for Grande Prairie, Alberta

  The Commission considered applications related to radio services in Grande Prairie in a proceeding that included a public hearing held in Edmonton beginning 19 June 2006. In this decision, the Commission denies seven applications proposing to establish new radio stations to serve Grande Prairie.

On 12 April 2005, the Commission issued Call for applications for a broadcasting licence to carry on radio programming undertakings to serve Grande Prairie, Alberta, Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2005-30 (the Call). The Call announced that the Commission had received an application for a broadcasting licence to provide a commercial radio programming undertaking to serve Grande Prairie, Alberta, and called for applications from other parties wishing to obtain a licence to serve this area.

In response to the Call, the Commission received nine applications for broadcasting licences to serve Grande Prairie. Those applications, together with the application that prompted the call, were considered at the 19 June 2006 Public Hearing held in Edmonton.

In Licensing of new radio stations to serve Grande Prairie - Introduction to Broadcasting Decisions CRTC 2006-621 to 2006-624, Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2006-144, published today, the Commission concluded that the Grande Prairie radio market would be able to absorb, without an undue negative impact on existing stations, the introduction of three new FM radio stations to serve Grande Prairie.

In Classic Rock/Classic Hits FM radio station in Grande Prairie, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-621, 15 November 2006, the Commission has approved an application by Bear Creek Broadcasting Ltd. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, commercial FM radio station to serve Grande Prairie at 103.3 MHz.

In Classic Rock FM radio station in Grande Prairie, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-622, 15 November 2006, the Commission has also approved an application by Vista Radio Ltd. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, commercial FM radio station to serve Grande Prairie at 104.7 MHz.

Finally, in Christian music FM radio station in Grande Prairie, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-623, 15 November 2006, the Commission has also approved an application by Allan Hunsperger, on behalf of a corporation to be incorporated, for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, commercial specialty FM radio station that will offer a Gospel music format, serving Grande Prairie at 96.3 MHz.

In this decision, the Commission denies the seven remaining applications, which are listed in the appendix to this decision.
