Order CRTC 2001-619

Ottawa, 8 August 2001

Aliant Telecom Inc.
Reference: NewTel Tariff notice 656

Community calling plan service

1.

On 11 June 2001, Aliant Telecom Inc. filed TN 656 seeking approval for proposed revisions to the NewTel Communications Inc. General Tariff to reflect the establishment of community calling plan (CCP) service between the following exchanges:

· Harry's Harbour and Springdale; and

· Harry's Harbour and King's Point.

2.

On 4 July 2001, Call-Net Enterprises Inc. submitted a letter of comment. Call-Net noted that on 27 April 2001, the Commission issued Public Notice CRTC 2001-47, Framework for the expansion of local calling areas and related issues, seeking public input to establish a set of general principles and criteria to be used in assessing applications for creation of common local calling areas.

3.

Call-Net submitted that the Commission should either deny TN 656 or defer a decision until principles of free calling area expansion are developed pursuant to PN 2001-47.

4.

The Commission notes that PN 2001-47 did not suspend the existing CCP criteria.

5.

The Commission finds that the proposed CCP service is consistent with the approved criteria.

6.

Accordingly, the Commission approves TN 656.
