NORTHWESTEL INC. - PROPOSED INCREASE TO LOCAL CALLING RATE FOR PUBLIC PAY TELEPHONES

  1.The Commission has received an application dated 3 November 1998 under Tariff Notice 682 from Northwestel Inc. (Northwestel) proposing to increase its local calling rate for its public pay telephones from $0.25 to $0.35 for the cash payment option.
  2.Northwestel stated that the public payphone service is not compensatory and will not be compensatory at the new proposed rate.
  3.Northwestel proposes a phased conversion of its pay telephones to the new rate beginning 1 January 1999 and completing by 1 July 1999.
  PROCEDURE

A copy of your comments should be sent to Ms. Araya Vivorakij, Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Northwestel Inc., P.O. Bag 2727, Whitehorse, Yukon, Y1A 4Y4.
  5.Northwestel may file reply comments by 15 February 1999.
  6.In addition to hard copy filings, parties are encouraged to file with the Commission electronic versions of their submissions in accordance with the Commission's Interim Telecom Guidelines for the Handling of Machine-Readable Files, dated 30 November 1995. The Commission's Internet email address for electronically filed documents is public.telecom@crtc.gc.ca.   7.When a document is to be filed or served by a specific date, the document must be actually received, not merely mailed, by that date.
  8.The Commission expects to issue a ruling with respect to Northwestel Tariff Notice 682 during the first quarter of 1999.
