Official Languages and Official Language Minority Communities
In keeping with the Official Languages Act and the Broadcasting Act, the CRTC must:
- enhance the vitality of the English and French linguistic minority communities in Canada and support and assist their development, taking into account their uniqueness, diversity and historical and cultural contributions to Canadian society;
- foster the full recognition and use of the English and French languages in Canadian society;
- protect and promote the French language, recognizing that French is in a minority situation in Canada and North America; and,
- ensure the achievement of the Canadian broadcasting policy objectives which include reflecting the linguistic duality of Canada and providing programming and opportunities which serve and reflect official language minority communities in Canada.
The CRTC holds public proceedings, consults with representatives of official language minority communities, relies on relevant research, establishes policies and makes decisions in order to meet these requirements.
